It’s only been 4 months since Kingsbury Watch Co released the military inspired MS1 Watch Set. On July 12th we'll take to Kickstarter once again to launch our follow up, the all new 1983 XL Pilot - Limited Edition (only 200 pieces are being produced). While the MS1 was mainly a no-nonsense rugged tool watch, the 1983 XL Pilot is an entirely different concept that blends the easy-wearing charm of a field watch with the design functionality of an aviator.

The 1983 XL is characterized by it's expansive dial, and like the pilot's watches of the WWII era, the 1983 XL is big - unapologetically so. The case, which measures 46mm, gives this watch a distinctive look and heroic presence. Matched with it's subtle 22mm leather strap and a not too bulky height of 12mm, it does not look gaudy or oversized on the wrist. The advantage of the large case is that the movement features found on the dial don't interfere with the numerals, as all 12 of the hour index markings are present and printed in bold white paint.

Despite its entry level cost, the 1983 XL Pilot uses a Miyota 8217 Automatic movement. Made in Japan by a subsidiary of Citizen Watches, the 8217 offers hand winding, a 24 hour sub-dial, date window and is capable of excellent timekeeping with minimal service. Based on the common found 8215, the upgraded 8217 is found in entry-level automatics and has become a key movement in the sub-$1000 category. Its inclusion in the 1983 XL is certainly a noteworthy value addition.

In keeping true to it's roots, the 1983 XL Pilot features Super-Luminova BGW9, which is colored blue when charged. This can be found not only on the watch hands but on the luminating beads above each of the index markings. This setup gives the watch a more subtle and refined look while giving off its glow.
